Chile fell to Ecuador in Qualifiers | SUMMARY AND GOAL

Ecuador got rid of the thorn of the 3-point reduction on the field by beating Chile 1-0 in Quito this Tuesday, in a long-suffering match for the sixth round of the 2026 North American World Cup Qualifiers. Chile finished hitting rock bottom in the South American World Cup. Outside the qualification zone for the 2026 planetary event, he was left without a technical director or a replacement generation that would allow him to raise his head.

Argentine Eduardo Berizzo resigned from La Roja after Thursday’s lackluster goalless draw against Paraguay, in which the Chilean team could not take advantage despite having an extra player for almost the entire second half.

Berizzo left the Monumental Stadium in Santiago amidst boos.

Neither the last vestiges of the ‘Golden Generation’ that led Chile to win the 2015 and 2016 Copa América nor the new bets could generate a positive change in the team, which failed to qualify for the 2018 Russia or Qatar World Cups. 2022.

“The results have not been as expected,” acknowledged ‘Toto’ after announcing his resignation.

After five dates of the extensive qualifier, Chile is eighth out of ten teams, with five points, only above Bolivia (3) and Peru (1).

South America has six direct places for the 2026 World Cup, while the seventh placed team will play a playoff against a team from another continent.

Since Berizzo assumed the Red bench in May 2022, he was only able to win one official match: against Peru for the third round of the World Cup.

Against Paraguay, Berizzo tried to change the face of his team by placing the historic forward Alexis Sánchez in the midfield and including the young Damián Pizarro in the attack.

However, none of their experiments provided Chile with clear scoring opportunities. A trend that had been repeating since he took over at La Roja.

This Friday the local federation announced that it will temporarily take over the youth coach, Nicolás Córdova, ahead of next Tuesday’s game against Ecuador in Quito (2,850 meters above sea level).
