Erik ten Hag told his Manchester United players on Wednesday evening that they must control their emotions and remain calm in the tense atmosphere at Galatasaray.

The Red Devils face a tough Champions League match in Istanbul this week as they sit bottom of the group with just two games to go.

However, they are not out of the race yet and a win in Turkey should put them in a good position to qualify, while a draw would also keep their hopes alive.

Galatasaray is considered an intimidating venue, especially in an all-important match, but Ten Hag reminded his players to stay sensible and cool-headed in the heated atmosphere.

“You have to stay calm and not get too emotional,” said the Dutchman. ‘Control emotions, don’t give them anything.’ Don’t give the referee a moment’s time either.

“So you should stay away from such moments.” You have to make it your game. It is not so important how the opponent plays, but how we play.

“We played some very hostile games away from home and played very well, calmly and quietly. Manchester United has a great history. We have to make it our game.’

Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes said he was pleased with the opportunity to take on the challenge from both the Turkish team and the home fans.

“I think as a kid you want to play in that kind of atmosphere,” Fernandes said. “They know that the away match at Galatasaray will be great, a great atmosphere.”

“As a player I enjoy playing these matches. I know you will be disappointed, but it must be a great incentive to play in stadiums with such a crowd.”

A defeat for Manchester United to Galatasaray at Old Trafford would mean they are knocked out of the Champions League at the first hurdle, with one game remaining at home to Bayern Munich.
