The reasons for a 35th place in the FIFA ranking, a free fall that we have not experienced since before the Gareca era

Its “worst” position was in May 2021 (27th). The Gareca era was so successful that when he took over the ‘Tigre’, the Bicolor was ranked 59th in the ranking. It took him two years to climb 41 points, obtaining third place in the 2015 Copa América and reaching the quarterfinals of the Copa América Centenario in 2016.

Today with Juan Reynoso At the helm we are in free fall and many do not hesitate to remember the Chemo del Solar era: in 2009 we fell to 91st place, the worst in our history. With Chemo, the national team finished in last place in the Qualifiers for the 2010 South Africa World Cup.

When the current coach of the national team – his departure is not yet official although it is only a matter of time – took the reins of the team, Peru was ranked 21st and fifth at the South American level. In the middle of the eight friendlies that he directed, he remained there until before the start of the Qualifiers, in September of this year.

What was Peru’s best and worst position in the FIFA ranking?

The best position that the Peruvian team obtained in a FIFA ranking was tenth place in October 2017, after qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia with the help of Ricardo Gareca. The worst position dates back to 2009, in Chemo del Solar’s last year at the helm of Bicolor.

The reasons for the debacle

Understanding that since 2018; It is not difficult to explain why Peru fell 14 places in just three months.

With Juan Reynoso, the Bicolor played six dates of the Qualifiers. And not only did they never win (two draws), but they barely scored a goal and are at the bottom of the standings. On this last date he visited Bolivia in La Paz, a team that until that moment was “the worst in South America.” After the 2-0 loss, we claimed that disgraceful badge.

A draw against Paraguay as a visitor and an expected – but painful because of how it happened – defeat against Brazil in Lima was Peru’s start in the qualifying process. Despite only obtaining one point out of six, the Bicolor only fell one place (from 21 to 22). But after the subsequent falls against Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and the equality against Venezuela, there is no choice but to continue in free fall.

That is the legacy he leaves us Juan Reynoso. The collateral damage to the football crisis is beginning to be felt in all aspects. The new coach – whoever is chosen – will have to start from scratch or even lower.
