Paris 2024 Olympics: CRIF demands that Emily Gomis be “removed from her ambassadorial position”

The case is far from over. On October 9, Emily Gomis, a former basketball player and ambassador for the 2024 Paris Olympics, caused controversy by posting an image on her Instagram account that referenced a Hamas attack. It showed a map of France increasingly covered by the Israeli flag over the years, and was accompanied by the question: “What would you do in this situation?” »

This position provoked a reaction from many Internet users who condemned the anti-Semitic post. This Thursday, the London Olympic silver medalist apologized. “My story on October 9th caused many reactions and emotions, which I understand,” she wrote. I apologize to those who were offended. In these difficult times, my thoughts go to all the innocent victims of wars and barbaric acts, the number of which is growing throughout the world. The accusations of anti-Semitism that I face are completely contrary to the values that were instilled in me and those that sport taught me. »

But the matter will not stop there. In fact, this Saturday the CRIF (Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France) announced that on Friday it spoke with the Minister of Sports, Amélie Oudea-Castera, “to express its outrage at the position taken by Emily Gomis.” According to them, the minister would “assure that the authorities of Paris 2024 have officially been captured and will rule in the coming days.” »

“The position taken by former basketball player Emily Gomis, who was in no way reassured by her explanatory message, offends the values of both humanism and Olympism,” CRIF said. The only reasonable outcome to preserve the image and values of the Paris Olympics is to remove Emily Gomis from her position as Paris 2024 Ambassador.”
