The Newell’s Old Boys club from Argentina announced, through social networks, the hiring of the Uruguayan coach and welcomed him.
Larriera led Alianza Lima in recent months, but was fired because he lost the final of League 1 2023 against the eternal rival, Universitario de Deportes, which meant that the blue and white team did not win the three-time championship. He had a contract for all of 2024.

The Uruguayan coach is questioned for having made surprising changes to the starting lineup of the blue and white team in the two finals before University. Even the player Bryan Reyna criticized him for not taking him into account even though he was in good physical condition.
Larriera arrived at Alianza Lima in the middle of this year to replace Guillermo ‘Chicho’ Salaswho had won the Apertura tournament, which allowed the Victorian team to play in the final of the Peruvian championship.
