Mikel Arteta has praised Declan Rice and admitted he was “crazy” to sign the England international after he impressed against Arsenal last season.

The Gunners spent £105 million to sign Rice from West Ham this summer and he will face his former club on Thursday when the two sides meet in the top flight.

Ahead of that match, Hammers boss David Moyes praised his former captain Rice and his current boss Arteta similarly praised the 24-year-old.

“If they put a price tag on it, you have to bear it and that is not easy,” says Arteta. “He did an excellent job.”

“He is a very humble man and the way he wants to learn and receive positive criticism is really powerful.”

“He has other levels ahead of him. I like his presence on the field. He is there and he has something special.

“I felt it when I played against him, that’s why I was angry to sign him. You have a feeling for players and I wanted him to be part of our team.”

“In recent weeks he has played a deeper role, but as a number eight he can be an incredible player. He can be a central defender if he has to step in when necessary.”

“He has shown that he has an eye for goals.” When he is in the opponent’s penalty area he is a real danger. This is something that can be developed.

“His leadership qualities, the way he will develop naturally in the team and at the club in the coming years, there is much more in him.”
