Renato Tapia is already a free agent to negotiate his departure from Celta de Vigo, with whom his contract ends on June 30.
The “bighead” arrived at Celta in the summer of 2020 from Feyenoord also as a free agent, and it didn’t take him long to take over the starting position. In the 2020-21 season he was the third most used footballer with 2,710 minutes (32 games), only surpassed by Iago Aspas (2,870 minutes) and Denis Suárez (2,863).
However, with no rest in the summer due to the Copa América dispute, the midfielder’s prominence was diminished in the light blue team, also harmed by the emergence of the young Fran Beltrán. In the 2021-22 season he played 29 games (1,402 minutes), one more than the next.
Last summer, Celta put the Peruvian footballer on the market, who was one step away from joining Olympique de Marseille. Finally, Tapia blocked his departure even though both clubs had already reached an agreement in principle for his transfer.
The start of the season was not easy for the midfielder either. For the first time since his arrival in Vigo, Tapia played eight games as substitutes in LaLiga. His first start was on the eleventh matchday against Girona. From there, and despite his expulsion against Sevilla, he has become indisputable for Benítez.
Celta will resume the competition next Wednesday hosting Betis in Balaídos, with the doubt of whether the celestial coach keeps Tapia in the eleven or already bets on the Brazilian Jailson Marques, his team’s first winter reinforcement.
