Four years ago, a young Federico Valverde divided the football world over a controversial foul on Álvaro Morata. Final of the Spanish Super Cup, Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid were competing, inch by inch, for a new title. In extra time, and one of the last plays, the Spanish forward went alone against Courtois’ goal. But the Uruguayan stood in his way.
From behind, with treachery and a bit of cruelty, ‘Fede’ swept Morata and prevented a clear goal opportunity. The Real Madrid midfielder was immediately sent off, but the score remained 0-0. Finally, the ‘White House’ would prevail in the penalty shootout.
On the eve of a new ‘Clásico de Madrid’ in the same competition (this time for the semi-final), Valverde was consulted about that episode and indicated that he would do it again.
“Sure, I would. As long as it’s for the team. If we’re losing 3-0, it doesn’t make sense. In that final we were playing the game, it was very close. If we went with that result, I would do it again. For the team, for my values. You always have to leave everything for the team,” he said.
????️ Journalist: Would you repeat Morata’s action again?
????️ Fede Valverde: “Yes, of course what I would do, if we had the same result, I would do it again for my teammates, for the pride that I have, for the team you always have to leave everything.” ????????pic.twitter.com/EH5suc2Slm
