Four weeks after becoming champion of the Apertura-2023 tournament, América returns to the scene this weekend when they visit Tijuana on the opening day of the Clausura-2024.
On December 17, at the Azteca stadium, América beat the Tigres 3-0 in the second leg of the Apertura-2023 final and thus achieved the eighteenth league title (14 in the professional era).
After his coronation, the América squad was almost intact, if not for the retirement of veteran full-back Arturo Layún and the arrivals of defender Cristian Calderón and forward Illian Hernández, both Mexicans.
With the continuity of his team, Brazilian coach André Jardine does not shy away from his obligation to seek the two-time championship in Mexico and the Concacaf Champions League title.
“We will seek to evolve, to be better than we already are. We are hungry to go for more,” Jardine told Mexican television.
The ‘Águilas’ will debut their crown on Saturday at the Caliente stadium against Mexican technical director Miguel Herrera’s Tijuana.
For Herrera, América’s visit is special since he was champion with this team on two occasions (Clausura-2013 and Apertura-2018).
“We are going to play a round game at home against América to score the first three points,” warned Herrera, who has not yet received reinforcements for the ‘Xolos’. He focused his preseason work on possession of the ball: “we no longer give it away so easily. “We manage it well and take advantage of the spaces.”
