With Brazil, Argentina and Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay as the main contenders, South America is putting two places in football at the Paris-2024 Olympic Games in contention starting this Saturday in Venezuela.

The host Vinotinto will face Bolivia on the opening day of the South American Olympic Qualifiers, in Group A, at 7:00 p.m. local time (23:00 GMT). The Ecuador-Colombia match, in the same key, will open the actions at 4:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. GMT) in this U-23 tournament. Both matches will be played at the Brígido Iriarte stadium, in Caracas.

Canarinha is the big favorite in Group A, led by Endrick, a Palmeiras star who will play for Real Madrid next season, and John Kennedy, one of the figures of Fluminense, champion of the Copa Libertadores.

They are high-level talents despite the difficulties that come with the fact that the Pre-Olympic is played outside of FIFA dates, so clubs are not obliged to give players to national teams. Coach Ramón Menezes expressed “very great confidence” in his team.

The Albiceleste will debut on Sunday against Paraguay at the Misael Delgado stadium, in the city of Valencia (central-north), in Group B, in which Peru and Chile will clash that same day. Uruguay, free at the start, completes this key.

Uruguay, meanwhile, accepts this event as a reminder of its Olympic history, with gold medals in Paris-1924 and Amsterdam-1928. He will, in fact, wear a commemorative t-shirt for the 100th anniversary of the first of those medals.
