Vintage cars: Reims at the start of the historic Monte Carlo Rally

It was in January 2023 that Jean-Claude Levrey resigned as president of the organizing committee of the Historic Monte Carlo Rally for the Reims stage. It was the association Reims Champagne Véhicules Véhicules Véhicules Sportifs (RCVHS) that was responsible from the very beginning for the launch of this sporting event in Remoy, intended for cars that participated in the “classic” Monte Carlo rallies between 1911 and 1983 (Rally Monte Carlo The 2024 Classic will take place from Thursday 25 January to Sunday 28 January.).

A year later, on February 1, 2024, it is behind the wheel of a Porsche 911SC that we will meet Remoy, who divides his life between France and Quebec. He will line up with driver Pierre Bos and 89 crews at the start of the Historic Monte Carlo Rally. Departure will begin in front of Halles Boulingrin in Reims on Thursday 1 February at 19:00.

The Coronation City is one of four European cities that host the start of this legendary race, along with Glasgow (Scotland), Milan (Italy) and Bad Homburg (Germany). All participants in this car competition are expected in the city of Monaco on Tuesday, February 6th.

“Childhood dreams”

For Jean-Claude Levrey and his driver Pierre Beauce (former European champion), this is not the first time, but a return: “In 1984 we won the rally with an Audi 80 Quattro,” he recalls. Forty years after that first experience, we decided to embark on this adventure together again. This is part of our childhood dreams.” And even at 71, Remua has not lost his desire for challenges. From the moment he applied for registration, he began a thorough study of the route: the various regularity zones through the Ardèche, Vercors and the hinterland of Nice, as well as his famous night on the Col du Turin.

“I go through the road books to be prepared. “We have a lot to do before the race,” he laughs. Our Porsche is undergoing maintenance; it was lent to us by a friend’s car. We are going to test it 48 hours before running over a hundred kilometers.” But Remua expects several traps on the 900-kilometer route to the principality.

“I’m looking forward to taking a little photo of the port of Monaco. So we tell ourselves ugh! We arrived. I don’t have any major concerns, but snow is a limiting factor. This could lead to traffic jams if drivers fail to meet the required averages. And we need to be extra vigilant because we’re driving on open roads.”

But before getting down to business, the Levrey/Beauce duo will have to undergo the usual administrative and technical checks in Reims, the day before departure. A moment celebrated by the general public, which will take place at the Exhibition Park of Reims from 14:30 on January 31st and from 8:30 on February 1st.

Remember that the Historic Monte Carlo Rally in Reims has been a meeting place for lovers of exceptional cars for over 20 years.
