After the terrible events that happened on the afternoon of Saturday, February 18, before the match between Universitario de Deportes and Melgar for date 4 of League 1 Te Apuesta, the Alianza Lima and Universitario de Deportes clubs came together and sent a statement to eradicate violence.
Communiqué from Universitario and Alianza Lima
Given the unfortunate incidents that occurred in Santa Anita, the Universitario de Deportes and Alianza Lima clubs report the following:
We strongly condemn any act that threatens the lives of other people, especially when minors are involved in events like this. We hope for the speedy recovery of those affected.
We categorically reject all forms of violence, regardless of the context in which it occurs. Crime cannot be justified or camouflaged in the name of sport.
We urge the competent authorities to carry out a thorough investigation to identify and punish those responsible.
As the most representative institutions of Peruvian football, we want to reaffirm our commitment to consolidate the values that have guided us since our foundation.
We call on all players in the football industry to unite to eradicate violence.
We are rivals not enemies. Let’s not kill football: let’s banish violence and fight for a safe and peaceful environment.
