VIDEO. How Copenhagen manages to get kids to bike around the city

BIKLU EPISODE 18 – “But when will that light turn green? “- asks 5-year-old Mani in front of our camera. We are located in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. And this little French-Danish boy is riding his bike in a rather special kindergarten: the road playground.

His mother, Lea Johansen, takes her two sons to this miniature city several times a year. “They learn to respect light and recognize signs,” she concludes. “I think it’s 90% a game, but it’s also about acquiring the mentality that a bicycle is a normal means of transportation,” explains Mikkel Bjarum, the father.

Every Sunday on the Le Parisien Facebook page you will find a new video episode of our series “Biklou”.

1,000 kilometers away, Nicolas Yu and his 11-year-old daughter Mathilde are cycling around Paris. In Matilda’s class, only two people ride a bicycle to school. “I like to ride my bike to school, it’s stylish,” says a smiling Matilda, pedaling in front of our camera.

But a majority of Parisians still believe that riding in the city is “very dangerous” for children or the elderly, according to a survey by the Federation of Cyclists. Thus, the city of Paris received a safety rating of 1.81 out of 5.
