In Peru, only 19% of the members of the boards of directors in national sports federations are women. Despite this, today, female athletes have been gaining ground in various disciplines, as we already recognize Angélica Espinoza (parataekwondo), Alexandra Grande (karate) or Kimberly García (athletics), who have been medalists in international competitions.
Along these lines, the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences (UPC) and the Sports in Equality Foundation organize for the third consecutive year the “Equality, Women and Sports Award”, which recognizes leading women in this professional field and people and organizations that contribute to women’s sports development in Peru.
“We are proud to recognize, give visibility and inspire new generations, promoting equal opportunities so that all girls and women can reach their full potential. Thus, we want to promote a structural change in sport, where gender does not limit the professional development of any athlete,” says Thalia Simich, representative of the Sports in Equality Foundation.
Likewise, it points out that there will be 18 categories awarded, with a trophy in honor of Rosario “Choco” Vivanco, the first Peruvian woman to participate in the Olympic Games in Tokyo 1964. Among the nominations, athletes such as: Fefa Lacoste (soccer), stand out. Kimberly García (athletics), Pilar Jauregui (parabadminton), Angélica Espinoza (parataekwondo), Flavia Montes (volleyball), María Fernanda Reyes (surfing), and sports organizations such as: National Paralympic Association of Peru, Sports University, Regatas Lima and the Badminton and Rugby federations.
This initiative has as technical allies the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD), the Peruvian Olympic Committee (COP), the National Paralympic Association of Peru (ANPP) and UPC Cultural. The ceremony will take place this March 8 at 5 pm in the Sala Alzedo of the Teatro Segura and will be broadcast live on the Zona Mixta program of Movistar Deportes (channel 03 and 703).
