Peruvian selection call

Forwards Gianluca Lapadula and Paolo Guerrero stand out in the first call made on Monday by Peru’s new coach, Uruguayan Jorge Fossati, for the friendlies against Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.

The 34-year-old Cagliari (Italy) attacker was called up for the matches that the red and white team will play in Lima against Nicaragua on March 22 and against the Dominican team on March 26.

Along with Lapadula, the presence of scorer Paolo Guerrero, who now plays for Peruvian team César Vallejo, also stands out.

Both friendlies will mark the Uruguayan’s debut as coach of Peru, since he replaced Juan Reynoso in December 2023, who was dismissed due to the poor campaign in the South American qualifier for the 2026 World Cup where he is last with two points in six games.

The match against Nicaragua will be played at the Monumental de Universitario de Deportes, while the Alejandro Villanueva stadium, of Alianza Lima, will host the clash with the Dominican Republic.

Peru is preparing in this way for the Copa América that will be played in June in the United States.

Fossati has the mission of qualifying Peru for the 2026 World Cup. The World Cup restarts in September, when it will host Colombia and visit Ecuador.
