Paris 2024 Olympics: Marchand, America’s Legacy

Reading a report the other day about Leon Marchand’s life in the United States, memories of a conversation with Xavier, his father, surfaced. This was at the beginning of the century. One evening, a little late. Or maybe one morning, a little earlier. Xavier, whom all his friends already called Bilute (we don’t even remember why), was finishing his long and wonderful career.

An opportunity to have a great party in Toulouse, to celebrate lots of jumps, antics, lots of camaraderie, real emotions and medals won in competitions with talent and ferocity. European vice-champion in the 200m individual medley in the heat of the Seville summer of 1997 and world champion in the sweltering heat of the southern winter of 1998, at a time when France was just developing in swimming, that’s the reason.
