Argentina could not be left in the hands of anyone after the process of César Luis Menotti in the Albiceleste, and the favorite of the world champion strategist himself in 1978 was none other than Carlos Salvador Bilardo, without knowing that later they would star in more than one discussion and debate for their playing styles.
Julio Grondona, who was president of the AFA for more than three decades, admitted that it was the renowned coach who recommended Bilardo as his successor. This during his participation in the program ‘Tribuna Caliente’, in 1995, after the exploits of both renowned coaches.
The program went viral after the death of Menotti, who died last Sunday at age 85. In this way, if the events occurred as Grondona described, Menotti would have suggested Bilardo and over the years Lionel Scaloni, current strategist of the Argentine national team.
Figures from the three world championships won by Argentina attended Menotti’s wake at the Argentine Football Association (AFA) grounds in Ezeiza: Scaloni himself, champion technical director in 2022; Héctor Enrique, midfielder who established himself in 1986 alongside Diego Maradona; and Daniel Passarella, captain of the team led by Menotti in 1978.
They were also accompanied by family members and other Argentine football leaders such as Ubaldo ‘Pato’ Fillol, goalkeeper of the 1978 national team, and Pablo Aimar, former player and part of Scaloni’s coaching staff in Qatar 2022.
The coffin was carried, among others, by the president of the AFA, Claudio ‘Chiqui’ Tapia, to the Futsal stadium of the housing complex that bears the name of another world champion, Lionel Andrés Messi.
