The music of the Olympic Games still rings in Jean Galfione’s head as he returns to Brittany after forty-eight hours in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). In Marseille, the Olympic champion from Atlanta had a front row seat to witness the arrival of the Belem, that 128-year-old boat that had set sail from Greece twelve days earlier to carry the Olympic flame. “It was a great party, it can finally begin,” smiles the former pole vaulter.
“Everyone who was there felt that something had happened. Seeing the crowd gathered in the Old Port was very moving. And then there were many surprises, very beautiful things. Of course, Belem itself is majestic, but it was accompanied by equally beautiful boats. All day they circled the coast, off the Marseille Islands… It was great,” says the man, who has since taken up sailing.
