On Instagram, his team Alpecin-Deceuninck clarified the reasons for this decision. “In connection with the Games, deciding on a summer program turned out to be a difficult task for our world champion. After careful consideration, a decision was made. No mountain biking, but full attention to the Tour de France-Olympic road race sequence. »

“It’s the most logical choice to prepare to achieve your goals without being limited by time,” explains Van der Poel. “Continuing to compete in mountain bikes was too difficult. But who knows, maybe I can go to the Los Angeles Games in 2028! » The Olympic road race will take place on August 3, less than two weeks after the Tour de France arrives in Nice. Meanwhile, on July 29, the men’s cross-country skiing competition will take place.

The Paris-Roubaix winner also took the opportunity to discuss the Tour de France, which runs from June 29 to July 21. “My ambition? I hope, like last year, to help my teammate Jasper Philipsen in his pursuit of stage wins and a possible green jersey. And I too have the goal of winning this year,” says the second stage winner ambitiously Tour 2021.
