Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Zaire-Emery, Hakimi, Tenace… PSG will soon solve the Olympic puzzle

Internally we insist that this topic is not a priority at the moment, that there is a season ahead and the French Cup final against Lyon this Saturday before planning for summer construction sites.

But behind this façade, Luis Campos and Luis Enrique have in fact already scheduled a planning meeting during which they will discuss, among other things, the question of making PSG players available for participation in the Olympic Games organized in Paris (July 24 – August 9). . It will take place a few days after the final in Lille, and will be attended by the coach, football consultant, and members of the Parisian club’s performance and medical staff.

No Euro Olympics?

If Luis Enrique said at the end of March that he was “pretty open” to his players participating in the Games – “What a hypocrite I would be if I had to stop them…” – his position has changed somewhat, recalling last week the club’s interests were weighed in this dossier, where each case will be studied individually. Players who are likely to only compete in the Olympics should not be treated in the same way as those who will already be playing at the Euros a few weeks earlier in their selection.

In this case we’re obviously thinking about Warren Zaire-Emery and Bradley Barkol being called up by the Blues. But Paris leaders are discouraging a possible Euro-JO sequence that could leave its mark on the physical level.

Privately, Luis Campos believes that it is difficult for a player to be constantly mentally focused and physically active for such a short period of time and over two competitions of this magnitude. Therefore, the presence of two Parisians on Thierry Henry’s list seems difficult.

A similar example could arise with Fabian Ruiz, who is expected to be on Spain’s list for the European Championships, even if to date he has not declared his intention to compete in the Olympic Games. Marco Asensio, for his part, does not consider this a priority after already having a taste of the competition three years ago in Tokyo, and expects more from the Euros.

Hakimi leaves this to the discretion of the club

For their compatriot Arnau Tenas, the situation is much clearer: The Games are the goal of this summer. The third goalkeeper was in the starting lineup of the Spanish team Espoir, which qualified for the last Euro and wants to continue this great adventure with his partners. PSG should not block a possible choice.

The last player most likely to compete in the Olympics is Ashraf Hakimi. If the Moroccan right-back has not officially expressed to his leaders his desire to participate in this competition, the possibility of participating in the Games under the jersey of his national team in the city where he has lived for three years is an inevitable attraction for him. . On vacation on the evening of June 11 after two qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup, the defender will submit to the decision of his club, aware of the symbolism, and therefore remains awaiting an answer that will not be long in coming.
