Cueva arrives, what is known about Guerrero and why did Carrillo return? Urgent responses to Fossati’s plan for the Copa América

With his sights set on the Cup, Fossati announced last Thursday the list of 16 called up from abroad for the friendlies prior to the championship to be held in the United States. l

In that sense, below we will resolve some urgent questions raised by the Uruguayan coach’s press conference. The Copa América plan is underway and there are still some answers in the air.

Will Christian Cueva reach the Copa América?

Jorge Fossati has been explicit with Christian Cueva. He never held back his admiration for what he considers “one of the most important footballers that the Peruvian team had in recent years.” The coach understands the importance of Cueva in the Peruvian team, as well as Carlos Zambrano or Paolo Guerrero. Since he took over as coach, the Uruguayan always maintained communication with the three, showed his concern when they did not have a team and provided them with support.

With Cueva the situation is particular. The midfielder is carrying out the last stage of his recovery from the injury to his right knee in Videna, under the gaze of Fossati. The coach said that he trains from Monday to Saturday, sometimes even double shifts, and was committed to returning as soon as possible.

, he said at a press conference. One of the reasons why the Uruguayan coach asked that the list for the continental tournament grow from 23 to 26 was Christian. Thinking about having him fully fit for the Qualifiers, Fossati wants to take him to the competition. For now he has been training in La Videna with the rest of those called up.

How is Paolo Guerrero’s recovery going?

“I’m making a great recovery, I’ve been doing field work, I’m still swimming with the ball, but I hope that this week I can start doing it.”, declared Paolo Guerrero a few days ago. The 40-year-old forward has been recovering from a muscle tear since the beginning of May, but he keeps his hopes alive of playing in his sixth Copa América.

Its situation is similar to the Cave. In fact, he was the first team that Jorge Fossati called when he took over as coach of the Bicolor. They both have a great relationship. The coach understands perfectly that the leadership of the ‘9’ is important in a locker room that, according to what we are told from La Videna, has shown a willingness to change the situation in the Qualifiers (last with two points in six games).

“I didn’t say that I was called up because I explained precisely that Yotún’s injury was not the same, unfortunately it leaves him out of all possibilities, but Paolo’s injury is not. This list is for the FIFA date, it is not for the Copa América. Here you are missing a lot that are from here, from local football, with that we are going to complete 29 0 30. Then I have to give a list of 26, there I will confirm if Paolo Guerrero and Juan Pérez are there or not, just then it is for the Copa América”Fossati said at a press conference when asked if Guerrero was going to be called up for the Copa América.

Why did André Carrillo return?

It was surprising when Jorge Fossati announced his first squad, for the March friendlies, and André Carrillo was not there. This time, the ‘Culebra’ was again present on the list after six months. The attacker will be available for the friendlies prior to the Copa América and will probably play in the continental competition.

André achieved promotion to the first division of Arab football with Al-Qadisiya, being the undisputed starter, participating in 27 games, scoring two goals and providing four assists.

Fossati was asked about Carrillo’s return and responded:

When will the local teams be known?

Fossati’s way of working at Videna has always remained in line with what may happen to the teams. That is to say, the coach always showed flexibility with the aim of providing facilities to the League 1 clubs. In that sense, he decided that the local team’s list will be known only after the last date of the international tournaments has been played.

“We cannot intervene in Conmebol, next week there are Cup matches (Libertadores and Sudamericana) so we are going to announce the list of those called up by the local media after the Cup matches. Regardless of this, on Monday There will be other players from the local environment who do not play in the Cup”he declared.

Starting this Monday, some players – from Cristal, for example – will begin to work in Videna with those summoned from abroad. After the matches of Universitario (vs. LDU this Tuesday), Alianza Lima (vs. Fluminense on Wednesday) for the Copa Libertadores, and Deportivo Garcilaso (vs. Metropolitanos on Wednesday) and Vallejo (vs. Defensa y Justicia on Wednesday) for South America; Fossati will announce the League 1 list.

From the ‘U’ there could be Corzo, Polo, Flores, Valera and Rivera. And from Alianza, Zanelatto, Catriel Cabellos and Jhamir D’Arrigo.

What will the Peruvian team’s farewell be like?

The Peruvian Football Federation and El Comercio launched the ‘Flag of Breath’ campaign, where fans of the ‘blanquirroja’ will be able to send their support to the players.

The 150 meter flag can be signed by fans in different parts of Peru. And then it will be delivered to the Peruvian team as support prior to the Copa América 2024. The estimated date is June 6, one day before Peru vs. Peru is played. Paraguay in the Monumental de Ate. There will also be a flag to say goodbye to those led by Fossati who will go to the continental competition in search of a place on the podium, as happened in 2019 (finalist), 2015 (third) and 2011 (third).
