Euro 2024: in the legislative elections “everyone in the French team thinks the same as me,” Marcus Thuram’s appeal against RN

He didn’t come out! Markus Thuram, who was apparently highly anticipated for his commitment to fighting racism, made a strong speech ahead of the legislative elections on June 30 and July 7 during a press conference organized this Saturday in Paderborn, Germany. The Inter Milan and Blues striker wants the French to mobilize to block the National Rally in two weeks. He speaks of a “sad and very serious” situation and points, without naming them, to television programs that could play into the hands of the far right.

We know your social and political commitments, especially regarding the fight against racism. What do you think about the situation in France with the rise of the far right?

MARCUS THURAM. She is sad and very serious. I found out about this after the match with Canada. We were all a little shocked in the dressing room, it’s sad… Every day there are messages on television to help this party go through. As Ousmane (Dembele) said, we must tell everyone to go and vote. We must fight every day so that this does not happen again and that the National Rally (RN) does not pass.

You say there are messages on television every day. What are you thinking about ?

I won’t quote specific shows, but when I’m in Italy, I turn on the TV and see certain debates… I think it’s meant to promote the rise of the RN.

Do you want to convey a general message within the group on the topic of legislative elections?

I have no doubt that everyone in the French team shares my vision. After this we are in a free country. Everyone should do what they feel, what they think is right. You can be more modest about this, but again, I have no doubt that everyone at Blue thinks the same way as I do.

Why is this important to you?

Saying it’s time for us to vote is not enough. We must explain how we got here and detail the gravity of the situation. It’s not difficult to talk about this. This comes from my character, from my upbringing. I know a lot of people follow me on social media, I have to convey certain messages.

The far right is also ubiquitous in Italy. Does this bother you?

In Italy too, yes, there is a problem. We saw him with Mike Maignan in stadiums. For me personally, this is not a problem because I am a football player. But this is for thousands of people in Italy. In turn, this is a problem for me too.

Do you talk about the political situation with your father Lilian, who twenty years ago opposed the National Front and Jean-Marie Le Pen?

My father doesn’t encourage me to do anything other than behave. I grew up with him, interacted with him, and I feel a responsibility to preserve these kinds of messages.

What is your relationship with Olivier Giroud Who knighted you here on Friday?

I have a lot of respect for this player. I was at Clairefontaine when I was young and had already seen him score goals in Ligue 1 and for the French national team. I make the most of it before he leaves to steal her little secrets, but he doesn’t want to tell me everything (laughs). It’s an honor, a pleasure, because every day I see the top scorer of the French national team.

What impression did N’Golo Kante make on you after his return?

I have the impression that three of them came to Clairefontaine (smiles). It’s terrible, we can’t play in training anymore when he’s on the opposing team. On the other hand, once we have it, it’s incredible. He reminds us why he is one of the best midfielders in the world.
