The British Lando Norris (McLaren) was second at 3.879 seconds and his compatriot George Russell (Mercedes) achieved his first podium of the year at the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit, in the ninth of the 24 races on the calendar.
The Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) abandoned due to a collision on lap 53 (of 70) while Ferrari, victorious in the previous stop in Monaco, experienced its worst day with the retirements of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
