“Fossati’s system does not suit the national team” and “it has to realize that it must renew”: JJ Oré, Kanashiro and Dancourt on the future of Peru after the Copa América

“We were going to make every effort to celebrate having a little more time. That was what it was all about and that was what we continued to do. What changes for me is that I can’t have the players for another week,” said coach Jorge Fossati in a press conference after the elimination.

Failure? What should be done from now on? There are endless questions at the moment. That is why El Comercio spoke with Juan José Oré, the Peruvian coach who led the Bicolor to the Under-17 World Cup in 2007, and three journalists, Daniel Kanashiro, Michel Dancourt and Eddie Fleischman, about the future that awaits the Bicolor.

Juan José Oré – Peruvian coach

1. Gallese is definitely the owner due to the guarantee he demonstrates. In defense, Peru has done quite well and there are players who respond. In the midfield, since Tapia was not there, Cartagena was the one indicated. I have had the fortune of working with those guys Tapia, Cartagena and Aquino and all three are ‘6’, but Cartagena is not ‘8’. Peña, Grimaldo or Quispe should play there. What we lack is a football generator and that is where Peru must improve.

3. I would say it is not a failure. Rather, I would say that you have to continue supporting the youngest. You have to realize that you must renew little by little.

4. He has arguments, because he is an experienced coach. We will have to see that he works for the benefit of the national team and putting the best players. There is no paternalism here and the coach has to be serious, direct and put the best players.

Daniel Kanashiro – L1 Max

1 – Gallese, Araujo, Zambrano, Callens, López, Cartagena and Lapadula. For me, today there are only seven permanent ones, the rest Fossati will define.

3.- An elimination today is not a failure, because the expectation is precisely to get out of that well where the team has immersed itself, in game and result.

4.- All coaches have arguments to support their qualification. The fact is that these arguments must be reflected in the results and that will only be seen in September. There is still a long way to go.

Eddie Fleischman – Contributor to El Comercio

1. Gallese, Callens, Cartagena, Flores, Lapadula.

3. For those of us who do not expect much, no. It will be the normal consequence of what has been sown.

4. Maybe he does, I don’t.

Michel Dancourt – Standing ovation

1. Gallese, Zambrano, Callens, Cartagena, Flores, Lapadula.

3. What happens is that in the last Copa Americas, Peru has always played roles that were not even respectable but important, quite prominent. Taking that as a precedent, it would be a very bad campaign, but it is true that there are times for the footballers that are very negative and I think that there are players whose level is not enough to be called up, for example Paolo Guerrero, even if it hurts to say it, or André Carrillo himself, who is slow, a Liga 2 player. I don’t know what happened to André and that the same thing happened to him as ‘Canchita’ Gonzales. I think that Peña and Quispe are not the option. For that reason, Flores should take a step back to have a little more time to elaborate ideas.

4. It seems that Fossati’s system does not suit the national team, perhaps having a full-back and a winger could allow Peru to attack more from the flanks, but I know that Jorge will continue to insist on his system and the truth is that there is little reason to think about qualification and a play-off. The truth is that for now there is little hope.
