Juan Pablo Varillas qualified for the round of 16 at the Buenos Aires Challenger

Peruvian tennis player Juan Pablo Varillas (129th ATP) raised the name of our country at the Buenos Aires Challenger in Argentina. The first national racket qualified for the round of 16 after beating Dominican Nick Hardt (355th in the ranking) by two sets to one.

The popular ‘Juanpi’ beat his opponent in an electrifying duel that lasted two hours and 22 minutes. The first quarter was favorable for the Peruvian 6-3, however, his rival overcame and managed to equalize the score after beating him 3-6.

In the last and third set, the Peruvian athlete managed to get his experience and defeated him 6-2. Now, he will face Argentine Santiago Fa Rodríguez Taverna (361 °) with the task of looking for his place in the quarterfinals of international competition.

Varillas is looking to win his third Challenger title in 2021, having previously won the Tour de Biella in Italy (May) and the Tour de Santiago II in Chile (October). However, in the ATP tournament in Santiago III, he was eliminated in the quarterfinal phase.

These tournaments allow the Peruvian tennis player to prepare for the Davis Cup World Group I playoffs against Romania in late November. The national athlete will arrive in optimal conditions for these decisive duels. Let us remember that the winning country of this series will advance to the 2022 Qualifiers.

It is important to mention that Juan Pablo Varillas is the only representative of Peru in the ATP Challenger in Buenos Aires, since our compatriot Nicolás Álvarez lost 2-1 (6-3, 2-6 and 6-3) against Argentine Nicolás Kicker by the round of 16.
