Four years ago, soccer lovers finally got to know one of the greatest joys that this sport can give away. Qualifying for the World Cup for a Peruvian was a frustrated desire for 36 years until Ricardo Gareca led the peruvian team to Russia 2018. On November 15, Peru beat New Zealand 2-0 and happiness was complete.
Four years have passed and that World Cup illusion still remains, despite the fact that the results have not accompanied the bicolor. At the close of the Qatar 2022 Qualifiers, Peru still has the chance to reach the World Cup. Tomorrow he faces Venezuela in Caracas and a victory can put us in the qualifying zone.
It is four years since that achievement and three since Peru said goodbye to Russia with that dream victory against Australia with goals from André Carrillo and Paolo Guerrero. Peru returned to the world event very revitalized, so much so that in 2019 it reached the final of the Copa América – we fell against Brazil – and in 2021 we again got into the semifinals.
After the World Cup, Peru does not have good figures in terms of results, but the road to Russia 2018 taught us to maintain the illusion.

THE UNIVERSE OF CALLED
Throughout these three years, Peru has played two Copa América and a total of 13 qualifying matches. Although it is known that Ricardo Gareca trusts in a closed group of players, he has had to open his universe to new appearances – Jhilmar Lora case – or to vital replacements in various positions, such as Gianluca Lapadula and Marcos López.
In total, Gareca has summoned 48 players in his appointments for official matches, but only 33 players with minutes on the court have had activity in the Playoffs. Meanwhile, for the two Copa Américas that he played, he called 36 players. It is surprising to see that Pedro Aquino did not play any of these tournaments, like Paolo Hurtado and Nilson Loyola.
Of those who attended the 2018 World Cup in Russia, only Alberto Rodríguez was not called again, while for various reasons, Paolo Hurtado was only summoned for the 2019 Copa América, but did not travel due to injury. Although he did play a couple of friendlies. The same for Andy Polo, who in official matches was only in the Copa América 2019 and the start of the Qualifiers.
