Nasser Al-Khater, president of the Qatar 2022 Organizing Committee, caused controversy with discriminatory statements against the LGBTIQ + community less than a year before the World Cup event. This was stated during an interview with CNN.

The manager mentioned that expressions of affection between members of that group in open spaces is prohibited. “Public displays of affection (between homosexuals) are frowned upon and this applies to everyone. Qatar and neighboring countries are much more conservative and we ask the fans to respect. We are sure that they will ”, he pointed.

“Just as we respect different cultures, we hope that ours is too. Members of the LGBTIQ + community will come to Qatar as fans and attendees of a soccer tournament and will be able to do what any other human being would do ”he added.

It is important to mention that in Qatar, Muslims who are from the LGTBIQ + community could be executed because they are governed by Islamic law which details the code of conduct of society, moral criteria and what is accepted or not.

Al-Khater invites Josh Cavallo to Qatar

A few months ago, Australian Josh Cavallo (the first active footballer to declare that he belongs to the LGTBIQ + collective) confessed that “I was afraid to go to Qatar because I had read that there was a death penalty for homosexuals in that country.”

Faced with these statements, Al-Khater responded on CNN: “We welcome you and invite you to come to see Qatar before the World Cup. Nobody feels threatened here, I think that this perception of danger is due to the multiple accusations and news that give a negative outlook to the country ”.
