Eitan Shaked, the mountaineer who was trapped for 24 hours on a glacier and survived to tell the tale

Eitan Shaked is 23 years old, he is from Israel and, like any young man, he usually shares a part of his life through social networks. He did so even when doing trekking mountain fell and was trapped in a crevasse of a glacier in Ushuaia (Argentina) for more than 24 hours.

The young man was hiking on the Ojo del Albino glacier, 20 kilometers from Tierra del Fuego, when he got confused on the way and fell 10 meters into a crevasse, being trapped for more than a day in a desolate area of ​​the mountain. The chances of someone seeing him were nil.

With an injury to his right eye and fractures to his pelvis, leg and elbow, Eitan spent his time thinking about how he would survive and despite everything He decided to record the terrifying experience with his cell phone. Videos that, from the hospital where he continues to be admitted, he shared through his Instagram profile.

“I fell, I hope my eye heals. I think I have broken my hand and foot. I do not know what will happen, my eye hurts a lot”, He says in one of the few fragments that can be heard in a story recorded in Hebrew, very weak and a few minutes after the accident. “I’m a fool,” Eitan complained.

His physical condition in the videos speaks for itself. Blood ran down his face from the deep cuts, It was difficult for him to move and even to keep speaking. Rescuers found him more than 24 hours after his fall and when he was already suffering from the first symptoms of hypothermia.

“Last Wednesday I went for a walk in Ushuaia and I fell about 10 meters. I waited 24 hours for the rescue, disconnected without ingesting water or food and also with my pelvis and elbow broken. When they found me I was on the verge of death from hypothermia, “Eitan said in an Instagram post.

How he survived 24 hours

Eitan was sharing different moments of his 24 hours in the mountains, where he was out in the open and had to go through a night with temperatures up to 5 degrees, with little food and water from a nearby stream.

“Many helicopters that every time they passed I hoped they were looking for me”, He said about a recording that he showed in which they are seen flying above him, without alerting his presence.

“These are the cookies I had on the mountain in my backpack. I planned to eat two every day and drink water from the stream until I save myself, hoping not to die, “he said with a photo published from the hospital. Eitan had to endure a stream of icy water that fell on him and allowed him to hydrate.

A guide passing through the area heard their cries for help and he alerted the authorities who immediately began a rescue operation to save him.
