Invited recipient Andy Murray to play in Melbourne

Currently 134th in the ATP, Andy Murray can no longer count on his ranking to integrate the main draw of major tournaments. Fortunately for the former world No. 1, there are the invitations, including the one he just received this Thursday from the Australian Open (January 17 to 30).

“Andy is known for his competitive spirit, passion and love for the game and I’m happy to welcome him back to Melbourne in January,” manager Craig Tiley said on the tournament’s Twitter account.

“I can’t wait to come back to play the Australian Open and I thank Craig and his team for the opportunity. I had a great time in Australia playing in front of an incredible crowd and I can’t wait to get back on the court in Melbourne Park, ”Murray recalled.

The 34-year-old Scot has never won the event, but has made five finals in Melbourne (2008, 2010, 2011, 2015 and 2016). His last participation dates back to 2019 and he was eliminated in the first round.

Winner of three Grand Slam titles in his career, the one who reached the world rank in 2016 is hampered by recurring hip injuries since 2017. Last August, he had already participated in the US Open thanks to a “wild card ”and had made doubt for five sets the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, 4th in the world, before losing in the first round.
