Strong left-handed shot against Mauriño Mendoza, goal and to celebrate the national title of Peruvian football. Waldir Sáenz sealed the definition in a penalty shootout against Cienciano on December 26, 2001 and thus gave Alianza Lima one more star, no less than in the year of its centenary.

Two decades have passed since that vibrant final that had to be prolonged until the shots from the twelve steps to know which team would become the champion. Those two decades, precisely, are fulfilled this Sunday and the ‘Intimate’ wanted to remember that moment of happiness.

“On December 26, 2001, we became champions in our centennial year. Today, we celebrate 20 years of that great moment. Up Alliance! ”Was the message that was read on Alianza Lima’s Twitter account. The post was supplemented with a postcard, just before the players start celebrating.

In 2001, Alianza Lima and Cienciano, as winners of the Apertura Tournament and Clausura Tournament, respectively, faced each other in the playoffs for the title. In the first leg, the blue and white team won 1-0, while in the second leg, in Cusco, the red team beat their rival with a score of 1-0. On penalties, the Lima team won 4-2.

That December 26, Alianza Lima formed with Gustavo Roverano, Guillermo Salas, José Soto, Cristiano Grotto, Sergio Ubillús, Juan Carlos Bazalar, Walter Reyes, Roger Serrano, Luis Hernández, Waldir Sáenz and Roberto Farfán. Henry Quinteros, Ernesto Arakaki and Roberto Holsen entered the second half.

On penalties, Soto, Quinteros, Serrano and Sáenz scored for Alianza Lima. Holsen missed his shot. In Cienciano, Luis Molina and Christian García converted; not so Martín García and Ernesto Zapata.
