Comorians hit by 12 Covid cases, all guards unavailable

For their first participation in a final phase of the African Cup of Nations, the Comoros have achieved the feat of qualifying for the round of 16, with a victory over Ghana in passing (3-2). The Coelacanths are due to meet host country Cameroon in Olembé on Monday. But the Covid-19 came to tarnish the beautiful story. 12 players and members of the Comoros management have tested positive, the federation said on Twitter on Saturday.

Among them is coach Amir Abdou, but also goalkeepers Moyadh Ousseini and Ali Ahamada. The third goalkeeper (Salim Ben Boina) being injured, the situation is critical two days before a historic meeting.

In a video, general manager El-Hadad Himidi also named five outfield players: midfielders Nakibou Aboubakari, Yacine Bourhane, striker Mohamed M’Changama and defenders Kassim Abdallah and Alexis Souahy.

“We are trying to do everything in our power to find alternative solutions” but “without the coach, without major players and especially without our only two goalkeepers who remained, the situation is quite complicated”, admitted El-Hadad Midday.
