Conmebol announced this Monday that it will maintain five player substitutions for each team in the 2022 editions of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, and will add one more change in the finals in case of extension, due to the current epidemiological situation due to the coronavirus pandemic. coronavirus.

All five changes were implemented last year instead of the usual three to protect player well-being. The substitutions were made in a maximum of three time windows, in addition to halftime, to avoid interruptions in the game.

“A maximum of five player substitutions will be allowed for each team, following IFAB/FIFA regulations”, said a note signed by the director of club competitions, Federico Nantes, sent to the region’s football associations.

“In the case of extension in the SINGLE FINAL, the teams may exceptionally make a sixth substitution”, added the information regarding the adjustments that are made for both continental championships.

The arrival of the highly transmissible omicron variant has triggered infections and deaths in many South American countries since last December. Conmebol authorized the return of the public to the stadiums from mid-2021.

For Peru, Alianza Lima, Sporting Cristal (group round), Universitario de Deportes and César Vallejo (preliminary phases) will be in the Libertadores. While Melgar, Cienciano, Sport Boys and Ayacucho FC will participate in the South American this season.

The Copa Libertadores begins on February 8 in the preliminary stages. The group stage will start the first week of April and the final will be on October 29 at the Monumental de Guayaquil stadium in Barcelona.
