Foxconn, a parts supplier for Apple, suspends its activities in Shenzhen due to a new wave of COVID-19

Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn, one of Apple’s main suppliers, announced on Monday that it was suspending operations in the government-locked down tech hub of Shenzhen due to a new wave of COVID-19 infections.

“Foxconn’s activity in Shenzhen, China was suspended from March 14, in accordance with the new COVID-19 policy of the local government”declared the Taiwanese company in a statement.

Foxconn, one of Apple’s main suppliers and a maker of iPhones, has its largest factory in the world in Shenzhen, employing tens of thousands of people. The Taiwanese company, also known by the name of Hon Hai Precision, did not specify how long it would keep the facilities closed, but relocated production to other plants.

The city of Shenzhen, located on the border with Hong Kong in the south of the country, imposed a confinement on Sunday to combat the increase in infections due to the omicron variant.
