Samsung T7 Shield: the firm launches a portable SSD the size of a credit card

T7 Shield is the latest addition to Samsung’s family of portable SSDs T7, an everyday device, and T7 Touch, a PSSD with an integrated fingerprint sensor for enhanced data protection.

Samsung promises in its statement that the T7 Shield is its most resistant PSSD to date, and is especially aimed at content creators and travelers who “handle a large volume of information” and fear data loss due to “ exposure to external elements and in the face of any mishap”.

The T7 Shield is drop resistant up to three meters high, in addition to having the IP65 certification for resistance to dust and water, and weighing 98 grams.

This new Samsung device offers a read speed of 1,050 megabytes per second (MB/s) and a write speed of 1,000 MB/s. These figures make it twice as fast as its predecessor, the T5, and up to 9.5 times faster than external hard drives (HDD) of the brand.

Samsung claims to have optimized the inside and outside of the product, changing the surface material and improving the ‘software’ on the T7 Shield, to address performance loss and overheating that occurs when transferring large files.

Due to this change, the performance of the device promises to be stable even when moving files up to 2TB. In addition, it minimizes heat generation. In this way, it is intended to withstand the performance of continuous tasks that involve a lot of data, such as recording, editing, encoding and rendering high-quality video.

Designed to work across multiple devices, the Samsung T7 Shield aspires to store a large number of images, games, as well as 4K and 8K videos whether on a PC, Mac, smartphone (Android) or game console.

In addition, security has been enhanced with ‘hardware’ encryption so that consumer data can be safely protected even if it is lost. It also provides access to the Magician ‘software’, which allows users to manage the unit.

Available in beige, black, and blue, the T7 Shield is offered in 1TB and 2TB capacities. The drive comes with a USB Type-C to C cable and a USB Type-C to A cable, and includes a three-year limited warranty at manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (RRP) of €178.99 for the 1TB and 327.99 euros for the 2TB.
