Is it better to leave my computer on or off? Know which is the best option

The computer it has become a key and unappealable tool for daily work. In the vast majority of jobs and trades, one of these machines is used to collect data, develop reports, deliver solutions, search for information and a host of other necessities of modern life.

But, with all the daily use that computers have, Is it better to turn them off at the end of the working day or keep them on?

The discussion arises from the fact that when computing was first born, it was recommended to “suspend” these devices, an action similar to keeping them on, since the boot times were slower.

Currently, the technology of solid state drives, one of the parts involved in turning on and starting the computer, has advanced to the point that starting these devices can take only a few seconds.

In addition, although the input of electrical energy through the different physical parts of the computer generates wear, this is hardly noticeable and minimal. To such an extent that an average computer today can withstand 40,000 power cycles.

That translates that a computer that is turned on and off every day could function perfectly for more than 100 years without being affected by said action.

In addition, according to the specialized technology portal Computer Hoy, “keeping your computer on permanently also shortens its lifespan substantially. And that’s because of the weakest link on the typical computer PCB: the ubiquitous capacitor.”

In fact, turning off computers also translates into drastic energy savings that is reflected not only in the monthly electricity bill, but also in the way we consume and how this affects the environment.

That means that, in fact, turning off the computer helps maintain the useful life of the capacitor in charge of regulating and filtering the voltage.

That useful life on average is 32,000 hours (about 3.5 years), so turning off the computer for 10 to 12 hours would be doubling the useful life of this vital piece for the operation of the equipment.
