Metaverse Standards Forum, a metaverse forum created by about 40 companies

Around 40 technology companies have come together to launch the Metaverse Standards Forum, a forum with which these technology giants seek to establish open and interoperable standards for the metaverse.

Led by the Khronos Group, this forum is made up of metaverse-focused game development and device manufacturing companies including Sony, Qualcomm, Microsoft, Nvidia, Epic Games, Unity, Huawei, Adobe, and Meta.

Among the members that are part of the Metaverse Standards Forum there are also entities belonging to the international consortium World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)which implements uniform technologies in the use and development of the Internet.

This group seeks to create a specific and consistent terminology of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology, as well as 3D, with the aim of formalizing the development of the metaverse as a unified concept, so that companies use the same technical standards and comply with the same regulations.

According to a press release seen by The Verge, the Metaverse Standards Forum will focus on “pragmatic, action-focused projects,” such as developer meetups for collaborative software development (also known as hackathons) and authoring tools. of prototypes to support common standards.

“Industry leaders have declared that the potential of the metaverse will be better realized if it is built on a foundation of open standards”, they have pointed out in this presentation document, which advocates “building an open and inclusive metaverse”.

Open to any organization and free of charge, the Metaverse Standards Forum, made up of 37 technology firms, will be in charge of coordinating the requirements and resources to “foster the creation and evolution of standards in organizations working in this field.”

In this conglomerate there are notable absences of technology companies that are developing products and services related to the metaverse, such as Apple, Niantic or Roblox.
