Thousands will be unemployed: Twitter confirms that a layoff plan will begin this Friday

The message said all employees will be notified Friday morning when offices in California open, but did not specify how many would be affected. According to the Washington Post, the company is going to lay off 50% of the approximately 7,500 employees it has.

“We recognize that a certain number of people who have made significant contributions to Twitter will be affected, but this action is unfortunately necessary to ensure the success of the company in the future”, the company informed its employees.

The head of Tesla and SpaceX bought Twitter for $44 billion and took control of it last Thursday, after six months of back and forth.

Musk immediately dissolved the Board of Directors, fired the CEO and other top executivesand launched new projects with targets to meet quickly. Several engineers reported having to sleep at their station some nights.

The tycoon, who initially called himself “Chief Twit” (Twit being cretin in English) and then “Twitter hotline operator”, called on Tesla engineers from Friday to supervise the work of Twitter employees.

“The ongoing dismissal process is a farce and a disgrace. Tesla minions make decisions about people they know nothing about. It’s completely absurd”, Taylor Leese, director of a team of engineers who claims to have been fired, wrote on his Twitter account.
