YouTube will extend the use of copyrighted songs in Shorts to 60 seconds

The content creators that use the Shorts format of Youtube, short video format, they will be able to use up to one minute of copyrighted music, which increases the 15-second limit that was initially allowed for these licensed songs.

Specifically, YouTube users will be able to use between 30 and 60 seconds for copyrighted music. Nevertheless, not all songs will enter this increase of time; some will remain at the old limit due to particular license agreements with each record label, publisher, or distributor.

To know what music is within this permissions update, the creators will have this information in the audio selector of the YouTube app. When choosing an audio track from the library, you can directly see the duration time that each audio allows.

These new options will begin rolling out to the iOS and Android app over the next few weeksaccording to Engadget, with the aim of making it more competitive with respect to other similar applications such as TikTok or Instagram Reels.

MONETIZATION PROGRAM

YouTube already implemented in September a monetization program for the Shorts which involved a distribution of advertising revenue with which the creators get 45 percent of the total amount earmarked for them. This option falls under the YouTube Partner Program.

Short form videos have grown in popularity on YouTube, where they have more than 30 billion daily views Y 1.5 billion users connected every month, according to data shared in September. These figures reinforce its strategy to overlap its main competitor in this area, TikTok.

MUSIC CREATOR

The company is also testing CreatorMusic, in beta phase, for its ‘partner’ creators in the United States and that can later be enjoyed in other countries. This program allows users to use copyrighted music in their long-form videos and the revenue from the video will be shared between the creator and the copyright holder of the music.

There are two options within Creator Music. On the one hand, a payment option, that allows you to use copyrighted music for a fee, so that the income of the video is not altered and goes to the creator. Secondly, a free option in which the income is shared.
