Young Peruvians create a university fair for schoolchildren in the metaverse

College fairs are where seniors decide which college they want to go to and, in some cases, what career appeals to them. However, many do not have the opportunity to attend these events. A group of young university students has developed a solution for this problem.

This is ‘Meta Week UTEC’, a project focused on creating a college fair in metaverse. In this way, adolescents from different parts of the country will have the opportunity to ‘visit’ different universities that are outside their city. just by using a virtual reality headset.

“Virtual reality has allowed us to delve into different fictional worlds or representations of our environment. In this case, what is sought with the project is ‘transfer’ schoolchildren to the universities they want to visit. Thus, they can ask about the careers that interest them and what budgets or materials are needed to study them. They could do all this from their homes, through this project”explains Teófilo Chambilla, professor at the University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC).

UTEC Meta Week still in development as a prototype. The young people Sebastián Quispe, Mauricio Rodríguez and Renzo Tenazoa presented the project in the final presentation of the Human Computer Interaction course, directed by Professor Chambilla.

The work is focused on reduce inequalities between young schoolchildren in Lima and those from the provinces when choosing the university to go to. To do this, they established the profiles of the students to whom the project would be directed.

The virtual world created by the young people shows the representation of one of the spaces of their university. The place is themed like a career fair within the establishment. In it, the student —represented by an avatar— can tour the fair and communicate with other students and university workers through virtual headsets.

“The concept of this project will obviously scale further. It is about using technology to provide greater opportunities to disadvantaged sectors. The more young people are interested in creating new things with technology, the more solutions to inequalities in education can be provided.”ends Chambilla.
