With Android 12, it will be possible to control your smartphone directly with your face

The recently released Android 12 beta for Google Pixel smartphones offers a new way to control several functions of the device, which Google is still working on. This is a feature called Camera Switch that uses facial recognition to read facial expressions and perform operations, according to information from the XDA Developers community site, relayed by 01 Net.

Accessibility options are traditionally intended for users with disabilities, or who cannot interact with the touchscreen. But in the past, however, some have been adopted by more smartphone owners. Camera Switch thus proposes to associate certain movements of the face with predefined actions. The tool is capable of detecting six facial expressions through the phone’s camera.

Scroll the screen with a simple glance

A smile, an open mouth, a raised eyebrow or even a look up, left or right allow the user to operate his smartphone. After adjusting the Camera Switch parameters, these gestures can be used in particular to scroll up or down a screen, return to the home page or to the previous page, make a selection, or even access the simplified parameters or the notifications page.

The sensitivity of facial recognition can be adjusted manually. Thus, for each facial expression, the duration and extent of the movement necessary for the action can be defined in advance in order to avoid any accidental gesture. The list of gestures that can be used could subsequently be enriched. While the tool is in use of the smartphone camera, an icon indicates that Camera Switch is activated.
