Waze is testing a feature that alerts drivers to roads with an “accident history”

Waze is testing a new feature that tells drivers if a road has an “accident history.” In this way, the app it would alert users that there is a possibility of a crash, due to what happened in the past.

What if the app warned you where an accident could happen? A new beta version of the Google-owned app, as reported by Israeli tech news site Geektime, can alert users to roads that have statistically high crash occurrences based on data from the Waze community”, notes The Verge.

By marking the roads in red, the user will be informed to make a better decision or drive with greater caution. “When using this new beta version of Waze, nearby roads that are considered high risk are shown in red on the map. Although, Geektime notes that it may not do this for roads that the user travels frequently. The feature also only displays a pop-up notification about dangerous roads around the driver, perhaps in an effort to prevent caution from turning into anxiety.”, he adds.

So far, it is only available to Israeli users who have access to the trial version. “While the feature is only in beta, it will likely roll out to the general public soon.. But if you’d rather Waze not paint the roads red when you go out, the feature can be turned off with a switch located in the app’s settings section designated for alerts.”, he concludes.

Although it seems like an alarmist function, in reality it is only to warn the driver that, statistically, vehicles tend to have accidents on some roads. These can occur for different reasons, but it is no longer a coincidence when it happens many times. Therefore, the user can be more alert to avoid any shock or damage.

Waze, which is now part of the group that oversees Google Maps, would have one of its first new features with this addition. The app, which is widely used by drivers, delivery people and taxi drivers, has become a necessity to avoid traffic or move around cities.
