ChatGPT: its use is prohibited in New York schools for “not helping critical thinking”

The city of New York has banned the use of ChatGPTthe chat of artificial intelligence become a success after only a month after its launch, according to various media today.

The reason is none other than to avoid its possible use, through tablets and phones of the schools themselves in the classroom, as a “help” tool in exams.

The spokeswoman for the Department of Education, Jenna Lyle, has released a statement in which she underlines her “concerns about negative impact on learning and content accuracy” from ChatGPT, a chat generated by a robot capable of answering questions and even writing texts in the form of an essay.

It does not support critical thinking or (strengthen) problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic and life success”, added the person in charge.

Lyle specified that the blocking will not apply to the devices that students bring from their own homes, and also said that the chat system can be studied within a topic on artificial intelligence.

The New York Post newspaper today cites the case of a South Carolina high school teacher who caught one of his students using ChatGPT in an essay on British philosopher David Hume, describing the result as “the one that could produce a very smart boy of 12 grade (equivalent to 17 years)”.

The New York public school network is the largest in the entire country -1,058,888 students in the 2021-22 academic year-, and the decision to block ChatGPT could be reproduced in other states.
