WhatsApp offers proxy support to access the app during Internet outages

instant messaging network WhatsApp has added support for global proxy connection, so that it guarantees access to the platform to all users even if the Internet connection is blocked or interrupted.

A proxy server is a connection bridge that acts as an intermediary between two computer systems, such as a computer or mobile browser, and the Internet itself. Thus, What a server of this type does is prevent direct connections between the sender and the receivertaking care of all requests.

Within this framework, WhatsApp has decided to implement this connection option for those users who suffer interruptions in Internet services, as detailed in a blog post.

Thus, through connection through a proxy a connection to the messaging network is guaranteed by servers set up by volunteers and organizations around the world “are dedicated to helping people communicate for free”.

The company has also explained that this type of proxy connection continues to maintain the level of privacy that WhatsApp normally offers, since personal messages will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption. In this way, it is guaranteed that the information transmitted does not reach intermediaries, proxy servers, WhatsApp or Meta. “Only you and the person you communicate with will be able to see the messages”has secured the platform.

This connection option is already available in the settings menu for the most recent version of the app. Within this menu you have to select the option ‘Storage and data’ and, then, Proxy. Once the use proxy has been clicked, the user will only have to add the proxy address and save it. It will be possible to verify that the configuration has been carried out correctly if a green tick is displayed.

If after configuring the service you are still unable to send messages, the selected proxy may be blocked. In order to solve it, WhatsApp recommends trying addresses from other proxy servers.

WhatsApp also offers a guide for those who want to help set up a proxy and help others connect.

In this sense, the main objective of this function is to evade the blocking systems installed by some governments and organizations, as well as Internet cuts produced to prevent communication with users. As WhatsApp details, they intend to end situations such as Internet connection cuts “for months” in Iran, which “they undermine the human rights of people and do not allow them to receive help in emergency situations”.
