Enjoy your last few months piggybacking on someone else’s Netflix account, because the company is finally cracking down on it.

On Thursday, the streaming giant announced it plans to extend its paid part program through the end of March 2023.

Plans were announced last year to reduce password sharing in response to the tide of disappearing subscribers that stopped as Covid-19 lockdowns eased.

Under the paid sharing feature, a new validation system is introduced that recognizes when users log in from outside the main account holder’s home.

The system prompts viewers to enter a validation code within 15 minutes.

Netflix reportedly allows primary account holders to add up to two additional users who do not receive a validation code.

And those who share their passwords are apparently being asked to pay a little extra. This was a $3 (£2.50) add-on in some countries, though it’s not yet clear if this will roll out globally.

Users of the main account or additional households can also use the service on the go.

Netflix can simply force people to sign up for a second account if it detects multiple sign-ins outside of the primary address.

According to the company, more than 100 million viewers tune in with passwords borrowed from friends and family.

While Netflix has said it will “roll out paid sharing more widely,” it’s unclear when that will be.

Many non-paying users won’t be happy with the change, but Netflix expects it “because some borrowers stop watching by not switching to additional members or fully paying accounts.”

However, the company expects its “amazing programming language” to force borrowers to sign up for their own accounts.
