Duolingo is the latest company to jump on the AI bandwagon by introducing an AI tutor powered by Open AI’s Chat GPT-4.

This week, the language learning company announced a new, more expensive subscription tier, Duolingo Max.

The new level offers two features: role play, an AI interlocutor, and Explain My Answer, which breaks down the rules if you make a mistake.

With Role Pay, the app will essentially take the place of a human tutor, allowing users to practice their language skills in different scenarios.

For example, you can use the app’s AI to practice ordering food and drinks in a Parisian café. Duolingo says no two conversations are exactly the same, even if you rehearse a situation more than once.

The second feature, Explain My Answer, allows you to ask Duo, the company’s chatbot, why your answer to a question was right or wrong, with the option to ask for additional explanations if you need more help.

Duolingo Max uses generative AI to create the most advanced learning experience on Duolingo.

This week OpenAI released its updated ChatGPT-4 with improved capabilities, including the use of prompts that its predecessor ChatGPT-3.5 was unable to compute.

In September 2022, Duolingo and OpenAI began working together to develop brand new learning features with GPT-4.

“This meant training the model for Duolingo’s specific use case, making sure the product had the correct security rails, verifying the correctness of the declarations, and adjusting the prompts used in Duolingo Max,” Duolingo said in a statement.

“One of the reasons we’re so excited about using GPT-4 for these functions is that it’s the most accurate (and fastest) version of the technology available,” said Duolingo.

“We have been working closely with OpenAI for months to test and train this technology and will continue to do so until the bugs are almost zero.”

However, since AI tools are still evolving and prone to bugs or “hallucinations,” Duolingo claims AI-generated statements are “constantly” judged for accuracy and tone.

Users can also report AI responses that don’t feel right by touching and holding an inaccurate message, choosing a reason for the report, and the company will take care of it.

Only English speakers using the iOS app and wanting to learn French or Spanish are currently supported.

Duolingo Max is available to subscribers after a two-week free trial for £19.99 per month (£9.99 if you sign up for a year).
