In the midst of digitization, car manufacturers migrate to touch screen controls. However, the company Hyundai goes against the trend and opts for physical buttons in its new line of electric cars.
Sang Yup Lee, the South Korean brand’s chief designer, said the revamp of its successful SUV deliberately uses physical buttons and dials for some of the most frequently used controls.

This was indicated in the presentation of the new generation of the Hyundai Kona, reported the Hybrid and Electric page. Why bet on a previous technology? For Sang Yup this is a security measure.
“For me, security-related buttons have to be with a physical key,” Yup Lee said. But the presence of these buttons could change with the improvement of self-driving cars.
And it is that touch screens require more attention from the driver, compared to the buttons. This could be risky, but for the Hyunda spokesperson, “when we get to level 4 of autonomous driving, we will have everything with programmable keys. But until then, when it comes to driving, it’s safest to keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel.”
