Twenty-five AI-generated avatars “walked” in a virtual city and this is what happened

Researchers introduced 25 avatars, which were generated by artificial intelligence, in a virtual city to find out what they were doing. The results of this experiment revealed that they are not that different from real people.

Those behind this test were a team of researchers from Stanford University. To simulate human behavior, they used GPT 3.5, a model based on OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Hand in hand with Google, they carried out this experiment to confirm that avatars can “simulate believable human behaviors”like memory.

The experts asked the avatars to perform tasks such as talk to a librarian or read a book.

Two of the avatars, called Isabella Rodriguez and Tom Moreno, they debated on the following elections of the city. Tom even voiced his opinion on what he thought of the fictitious candidate named Sam Moore.

“To be honest, I don’t like Sam Moore” said. “I think he is out of touch with the community and does not have our best interests at heart”.

Similarly, Isabella turned off her kitchen and he made a new breakfast when he was told his food was catching fire. The avatars were also able to organize a Valentine’s party without anyone else giving them that order.

After the experiment, the specialists concluded that these avatars were capable of “produce credible spontaneous individual and social behaviours”.
