Germany takes advantage of space: adds a roof with solar panels to the bike path

Germany has launched a new covered bike path. But it’s not just about providing shade. Actually, the new covered track has solar panels as part of a pilot project to generate clean energy.

These panels are located in the German city of Freiburg, the first European city to have this type of lane. The project is being run by the energy provider Badenova, together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems and the city of Freiburg.

The system was installed along 300 meters in length, according to a report on the Somos Eléctricos page. The roof has 900 solar modules from the German manufacturer Solarwatt, which should generate about 280 MWh per year.

In addition to generating energy, this structure also means a moment of rest for the cyclists since it provides them with shade when it is very hot. It can also protect them from rain.

It is not the only solution that is delivered with comfort and use of space in mind. Options such as a floating and solar road for bicycles have also been known.
