Apple Vision Pro: what are they made of and why are they so expensive?

As part of its Worldwide Developers Conference 2023 (WDDC 2023), Manzana surprised the world with the presentation of its mixed reality viewer, Vision Pro, based on a new generation of technology called spatial computing that, beyond its innovation, attracted attention due to its price, which seems to be well justified.

The first thing to say is that the viewer will not go on sale anytime soon. The company announced that it will be until next year when they are available in the United States. Until then its official price will be known but, for now, it is speculated that it will cost around 3,499 dollars.

This means that it is not known when the device could arrive in Mexico. What is clear is that not everyone will be able to afford to buy it since its cost is estimated at around 60,000 pesos, taking into account the current exchange rate.

The cost seems out of proportion but we are going to tell you why it is justified.

What do the Apple Vision Pro do?

Mixed reality viewers are the company’s new bet that aims to change the way we interact with technology.

The Apple Vision Pro are capable of providing both virtual reality and augmented reality experiences. Users control the device through voice and hands.

According to the tests released by Apple, from the viewer the user can see and interact with their apps, delve into their personal videos and images, play video games, participate in video conferences and much more.

Apple points out that the Vision Pro are part of a new generation of technology called spatial computing and stressed that one of the most relevant features is that the device’s screen allows you to see everything that is around you, so that the person does not lose contact with the real world.

Why is the Apple Viewer so expensive?

As we already mentioned, it is estimated that the Vision Pro will hit the market in 2024 and will be priced at $3,500. But is its price justified?

Beyond the design issue, one of the features that fans of the brand love, among the reasons why technology specialists consider that its cost is adequate is because this viewer is technically much more advanced than any other and has with the Apple ecosystem behind it, which means that there will be thousands of applications that can be used.

Also, as the American outlet Mashable explains, producing the Vision Pro probably costs a fortune.

It should be mentioned that the device is equipped with an M2 and a new R1 chip, designed to process signals from a dozen cameras and many sensors. Also, the XR2 headphones are high-tech.

Apple distinguishes itself by using its own chips, which means absorbing manufacturing costs and the likely shortage of materials that has not been able to be regularized after the pandemic.

To this we must add its Micro-OLED screen, capable of offering incredibly high resolution and high brightness in a small panel. And not only that, you have the option to show the user’s eyes during some interactions, which increases both the power consumption and the BOM.

Finally, it should be noted that the body is built in a piece of laminated glass.

As you will see, at the hardware level, it is not an easy or cheap device to produce and, apparently, it was not Apple’s intention either. Vision Pro is such a powerful and expensive scope that it is not intended for the masses. It is more intended for developers, and perhaps some fans of the company and technology. What’s more, under the current circumstances, the company probably can’t produce them in very high volume.
