The fall of Skype: from being the favorite platform for video calls to being relegated to Teams and Zoom

skype has become a secondary video calling app since its purchase by Microsoft and especially since the pandemic, when a good part of its users began to opt for other platforms such as Teams, Slack or Zoom.

Skype is a video calling platform that facilitates the meeting of members located in different locations and that also allows calls and sending instant messages, as well as sharing files with other users.

Born in the 2000s, it became the preferred option among users of mobile phones and computers to contact other users. It was five years later when eBay bought it, while Microsoft did so in 2011.

In recent years, other similar platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Slack have emerged, while services such as Facebook and WhatsApp, both owned by Meta, have implemented video call options, which is why Skype has ceased to be a priority for many users, especially as a result of the pandemic.

According to an analysis carried out by CNBC, Skype has gone from having 40 million active users to 36 million, according to the spokesperson for the platform. In contrast, Microsoft Teams -a direct competitor of this other platform- has gone from having 250 million monthly users in July 2021 to more than 300 million in the first quarter.

Among some of the aspects that would justify this unfavorable situation for Skype is the speed at which it implements functionalities, since this medium recalls that when Skype announced in 2021 that it introduced the capacity for group video calls of up to one hundred participants, in Teams it was already available from the start. previous year the option of chats of up to 300 members.

For Microsoft, “Skype will continue to be a great option for people who love it and want to connect through messages, audio and video calls, and Bing Chat.”, a spokesperson has indicated to the aforementioned medium.
